Homepage _ News _ Royal Mail workers to strike!
Talks continue between the Royal Mail and the CWU to avert the strike announced for next week. Although the leaking of a suspiciously anonymous document that lays out a loose framework for breaking the unions and forcing through change may not bode well for a peaceful conclusion to the dispute. Managing Director at the Royal Mail Mark Higson said the union "raises a number of issues, now including a demand for more money" and that the company will give a detailed response.
In the run-up to the Christmas post peak and with the onslaught of digital communications the union's stance is hard to understand. No one wants to see an unhappy Royal Mail workforce but in the face of harsh commercial conditions something has to change. Peter Mandelson has announces that it would be suicidal for the unions to strike but as a government they are steadfastly staying out of the negotiations.
As per usual the government is sticking its head in the sand - to be fair they are in a difficult position as the Labour Party gets millions of pounds of donations from the Commercial Workers Union so can't be seen to explicitly go against the unions for fear of losing yet more money into the political coffers. Yet with the government budget deficit still expanding the government cannot fund the Royal Mail's pension deficit or fund any ongoing losses that would result of a failure to implement change. Add to all this the mysterious leaked document that implies government support for breaking the unions as the single shareholder in the Royal Mail then the plot thickens.
